Sonoma County Transportation & Land-Use Coalition

On SCTLC’s website, we attempt to explain some of the shortcomings of the auto-centric approaches that dominate our lives. At the same time we present constructive alternatives that are realistic and economic. As far as possible, we try to illustrate these alternatives with examples of successful approaches used elsewhere. We also call attention to Sonoma County initiatives that we think are pointed in the right directions. There are many.

The Challenges

Community: People-centered communities need alternatives to the automobile that combine safety, convenience and affordability.

Climate: All publicly-funded improvements must make progress towards the goal of net-zero carbon transportation.

Transportation: We need a transportation system that is energy-efficient, conserves land and benefits the community, and is based upon a county-wide cooperative planning process.

Land Use: Building denser cities and minimizing urban sprawl reduces miles traveled and leaves land for wildlife, open space, sustainable agriculture, and ecosystem services.

Funding: Divert funding streams to build the systems of the future rather than the past.
